The New England Society of Clinical Engineering
It’s not often that a biomed association or society’s first impressions are made through their website, but in the case of The New England Society of Clinical Engineering (NESCE), the tan, blue and white website has a professional look and provides a hint of the caliber of organization it represents. The NESCE membership is “comprised of biomedical equipment technicians, clinical engineers, hospital IT specialists, medical equipment sales and service representatives and other individuals involved in the area of healthcare technology management and medical equipment maintenance and support,” according to the website. The group’s officers include: Barrett Franklin, President; Danielle McGeary,...

Corey Weeden | TechNation Professional of the Month
Professional of the Month | November 2011
Corey Weeden
The biomeds nominated as TechNation’s Professional of the Month are often humble. They don’t see themselves as particularly special: just people doing their job as best they can. That would describe this month’s honoree, Corey Weeden, Biomedical Equipment Technician at Crystal Run Healthcare. “I’m not really anyone special. I enjoy my job, do it to the best of my ability and work hard to keep the patients and staff as safe as possible,” Weeden says. Juggling dual obligations, Weeden handles the duties of his BMET position with Crystal Run Healthcare while simultaneously executing his duties as an Air National Guardsman....

Dennis Duck, CBET
How many people decide to become a biomed on a tropical island ? Well, at least Okinawa Island has palm trees. Dennis Duck, CBET, was a hospital corpsman in the Navy, stationed on Okinawa when a tech he knew piqued his interest in biomed. Duck had already had an interest in electronics for several years, so it seemed like a good fit for a career change. He had wanted to become an electronics technician, but the Navy had already met its quota for enlistees that year. At the time, a biomed was a hospital corpsman who worked on medical equipment....

Florida Biomedical Society
The sunshine state has a biomedical society that spans the length of the state, from the panhandle down to Miami. Composed of five local chapters, the Florida Biomedical Society (FBS) consists of the Gulf Coast Biomed Society, the Northeast Florida Association of Medical Instrumentation, the Central Florida Biomedical Instrumentation Society, the Sun Coast Association of Medical Instrumentation and the South Florida Association of Medical Instrumentation. The FBS finds its roots back in 1985. There was no statewide association at the time and clinical engineer Frank Magnarelli from Miami sat in on a meeting that was coordinated by Tom Judd, Director...

Pittsburgh Annual Biomedical Conference
Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door. This paraphrase of the Emerson quote can be applied to the biomed community as well: Stage a biomed conference where one is needed and the local biomed community will come. That seemed to be the case in New Kensington, Pa., at the Penn State New Kensington campus recently. The cooperation of a well-known medical device manufacturer and a wellknown biomed program were the impetus for the first Pittsburgh Annual Biomedical Conference. The event was co-sponsored by MEDRAD Service and the Penn State University Biomedical Engineering Technology...
