Here is a list of things to be included, as a minimum, for a small biomed shop. This is to serve as a list of things to consider when planning a new shop. Obviously, if you can exceed the items listed, you will be much better off. But I consider the items listed to be the absolute least required for a functional HTM shop operation.
Location
-Inside hospital — cannot take patient care equipment outdoors in inclimate weather.
-Must not require ramps or steps to move from hospital to shop.
-Near maintenance and receiving, but with easy access to major clinical departments (surgery, central supply, critical care, nursery, neonatal)
Space
-Technician work bench space, usually 150 sq ft per tech
-Office/supervisor/computer area
-Technical library, for manuals, catalogs, reference material
-Storage area
-Parts, equipment storage, receiving, supplies, old equipment for cannibalization.
Layout
-Wide doors leading into main, open area.
-Open, few, if any, walls.
-Work benches along outside walls.
-1 Office for manager
-Secure – must be securely locked when no one is in shop.
Utilities
-Water, with large utility sink
-Many electrical outlets.
-1 If dual electrical voltages, must have all present in shop
-Medical oxygen
-Medical compressed air
-Computer network plus
-robust WiFi
-Internet access, fast!
-Cellular telephone coverage.
Furniture
-Electronics workbenches, 1 per technician, plus 1 or 2 for outside service personnel to use.
-Desk for office
-Bookshelves for manuals and catalogs
-File cabinets for small manuals and reference documents.
-Padded stools and chairs, appropriate height for benches and desks.
Office Technology
-Computer, 1 or 2
-Laptop, may be needed for equipment calibration or to view service literature outside of the biomed shop.
-Printer, laser, color, two-sided if possible.
-Photocopier
-Should have ability to scan documents, as well as send and receive faxes.
-May be combined with printer for a single device to meet all needs.
Software
-Microsoft office or a free alternative (for .doc. .xls, .ppt files)
-Adobe reader (for pdf files)
