I was reading an article about whether or not you should allow people flexible work hours or a work from home option. Some managers hate this idea. They like to know everyone is at their job at the same time every day. And there is definitely something to be said for continuity and structure. But when someone asks if they can work a little differently, the real question we should be asking our self as a manager is, “Does this make sense?” Can they get their job accomplished just as well, and with no negative impact to others getting their job done? If the answer is yes, I say, why not?
I have found quite often that productive people can get the job done anywhere, at any time. I have seen the part-time temp run circles around the full time un-engaged employee, and then eagerly ask if they can help with proofreading at home after they put the kids to bed. Clearly there are times when you need coverage physically, for example in a bio med shop; the hospital needs tech coverage 24/7. But when it comes to some of our admin positions, it’s time to start thinking outside the box. Just because a job has always been 9-5 doesn’t mean we’re locked in. And we don’t have to do the same for everyone. Different jobs have different requirements. I think managers put unnecessary restrictions on themselves when they start thinking, “If I do it for her, then I’ll have to do it for everyone….” Not true. As long as you are not playing favorites, it may very well be that proofreading can be done at home, but the admin taking service calls must be present in the office during specific hours.
It’s okay and legal to have different hour and work locations requirements for different jobs. Let’s start doing what makes sense for the department and our employees.
