The webinar “Reclaiming Our Right to Repair: Understanding Challenges and Taking Back Control” was sponsored by PartsSource. It was eligible for 1 credit from the ACI.
PartsSource Chief Marketing Officer Kelly Starman, PIRG’s Right to Repair Campaign Director Kevin O’Reilly and Director of Technology Management/ENTECH at Banner Health Wesley Reid presented firsthand insights and experience. They shared from the front lines of the movement advocating for the common goal of patient safety and quality care. This educational webinar also included concrete examples and strategies to elevate the way HTM professionals think about right to repair, while setting the stage for a broader industry discussion. The presenters also called for increased participation from the HTM community.
Attendees now better understand the “Right to Repair” including the background of the movement and implications for HTM. They were able to learn from the challenges, real scenarios and actions taken by HTM leaders and their organizations. Attendees can now better identify opportunities to take more control and become an active participant in the movement to support patient safety and quality care.
It was a popular webinar with 109 attendees who were active in a question-and-answer session toward the end of the webinar. One question was, “How does the right to repair movement address traceability and competency issues?” Another question was, “So, what about the ability to use third-party parts and medical devices?”

“This really confirmed that what we are doing is correct and that we aren’t the only ones doing it,” CHI Memorial Hospital CE Manager Harold Camp said.
“Yes! It was great to see how big and widely discussed an issue this is and to better understand what is happening at a campaign, lobbying level,” Kaiser Permanente Clinical Systems Engineer Angelina Chiaracan said.
“Yes, I appreciate the right-to-repair update from the presenters. They clearly had updated information to share and clear ways for all of us in the HTM field to get involved,” Kaiser Permanente Executive Director Tom Cabellero said.
“Yes! I was unable to watch the first 20 minutes as I was pulled away. Thank you for showing us how and what things need to take place in the background for the right-to-repair movement to take place. It feels like there is a lot of headwind regarding corporate backers and sponsorship in the political environment that will fight against it. If people were more aware of it and could vote on this, it would get passed in a heartbeat. It’s good to know also that there will be accountability regarding quality and compliance on repair parts for everyone’s safety,” Providence St. Vincent Senior Biomed Tech Brian Judah said.
“Yes. I am very passionate about the right to repair. I’ve been studying the issue for a long time and this webinar put Kevin on my radar,” Argo Biomedical Solutions Sales Manager Todd Schmechel said.
