“You could say I’m a jack of all trades and master of none”, says Gaby, rather understating the incredibly important work she does. But as a Biomedical Technician based in Northside Hospital, Cherokee, GA, it’s true that there are many different aspects to her role.
“I’m an engineer, an administrator and a service representative rolled in to one.” she says, “and I have two key objectives. First, and most important, is to ensure the healthcare professionals in my hospital have the equipment they need to deliver the highest standards of patient care. Second, is to ensure that same equipment is inventoried and logged, so the hospital is inspection-ready at any given time.”
Before she joined GE Healthcare, Gaby worked in a similar role with a third-party, non-OEM company. “It was basically sink or swim,” she says. “I guess it served me well – toughened me up and taught me how to think on my feet. But what really struck me when I joined GE Healthcare was the sense of camaraderie.”
“Another great thing about working here,” Gaby continues, “is that you’re treated like a grown-up. You’re free to manage your own schedule, so if there’s a reason you need to work from home one day, you can. My daughter is a year and a half old now, and I’ve never felt that either ‘Mom Gaby’ or ‘GE Gaby’ has ever been compromised.”
And more generally, what is it like being a woman in a field historically dominated by men?
“It has its challenges, of course,” Gaby says with a wry smile, “but the world is changing. Here in Atlanta, our top anesthesia tech is actually a woman, and over the last three years, I’ve noticed a lot more female technicians coming through. Another happy consequence – that I hadn’t considered before – is the confidence that succeeding in male-dominated environment gives you out in the wider world.”
So it’s clear that Gaby feels GE Healthcare was the right move for her. But what advice would she give to those from other industry sectors, who are thinking of moving into healthcare and developing a career in a similar role?
“I’d say do it!” is her unequivocal response. “If it’s a field you’re interested in and keen to explore, give it a try. If you believe you can do it, you probably can, and the team will be there to support you all the way. GE Healthcare really is a great company to work for. It doesn’t hurt that the benefits are so impressive, but honestly, there’s a whole lot more to it than that.”
