Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) Biomedical Electronics Program Instructor Don Cormier reports that close to 200 prospective students recently attended an open house hosted by the college’s engineering and technology department.
Cormier was impressed by the turnover, especially considering Wisconsin’s predictably unpredictable weather made things difficult.
The event was designed to give future students the opportunity to meet with hospital staff from the area who could be the very organizations that hire them after they earn a two-year associate degree. Current students were also on hand to answer questions from the prospective students and their parents.
The open house is just one way that many within the HTM community are recruiting future biomeds as a workforce shortage continues to grow. The retirement of many experienced baby boomer biomeds is among the challenges the industry faces now and in the coming years.
