One only has to turn on the news each day to hear about the latest cybersecurity breach and massive level theft of personal information. Never before in the history of data storage has information been such a valued commodity. Critics are now comparing digital theft to the bank robberies of the wild-west days. How does a cyber breach affect physicians and their patients? How can, not only patient records be protected, but also, the medical devices used in healthcare? Come learn and collaborate with other healthcare providers about the latest attacks on the medical system and what can be done to prevent the next catastrophe.
Dr. Karen C. Benson is the Program Director of Cybersecurity at Gwinnett Technical College where she teaches and administers the cybersecurity program to over 1000 students. Before coming to the college, Dr. Benson was an IT Network Design Specialist in the Atlanta area for over 40 years. She now uses this knowledge acquired in the field to teach and mentor other students under her tutelage at Gwinnett Tech, Liberty University, and Georgia Gwinnett College. As an advocate for cybersecurity training at all levels of industry, Dr. Benson has published articles on The Pedagogy of Blockchain, Teaching Cybersecurity to College Students, and hosted TechTalk events for college students. Furthermore, she speaks at conferences on methods to implement ‘gamification’ into cybersecurity courses, where simple games are used to teach basic security concepts. Dr. Benson is a member of the Association of Internet Technology Professionals (AITP), Women in Technology (WIT), the Internet Security Association (ISA), and is a 2nd Lieutenant in the Georgia State Defense Force.
