Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas recently made history as the first hospital in Nevada to earn the Comprehensive Heart Attack Center Certification from The Joint Commission.
This is “a remarkable achievement in advancing cardiac care. Achieving this certification demonstrates their dedication to delivering exceptional cardiac care for their patients and serving their community with excellence,” according to a LinkedIN post about the certification.
Level I Comprehensive Heart Attack Centers (CHAC) build upon the services available at Level II and III hospitals. This designation is for hospitals performing both cardiac surgical services and primary PCI 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Level I centers also excel at providing care to patients with cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest and provide care along the continuum including cardiac rehab. CHAC programs are a hub in the cardiac systems of care but may refer patients for cardiovascular services they do not offer.
What It Takes to Be Certified
CHAC certification requires hospitals to:
- To provide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-site coverage for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) and cardiac surgical services.
- To have a multidisciplinary team approach which offers a full range of advanced hemodynamic support for the treatment of the most complex and critically ill patients, including those with cardiogenic shock and cardiac arrest.
- To meet 9 standardized performance measures such as ECG within 10 minutes of arrival, PPCI ≤ 90 minutes, and EMS FMC to PCI ≤ 90 minutes.
- To collect performance measure data four months prior to the initial certification review visit.
