The AAMI Foundation will host two complimentary patient safety seminars in August. One will focus on clinical alarm management and the other will deal with monitoring systems.
The first seminar, set for 12 p.m.–1 p.m. ET on Aug. 3, is “Alarm Management: From Confusion, to Information, to Wisdom.” The seminar will feature presentations from officials at two hospitals who will describe how they use alarm data to enhance both alarm effectiveness and patient safety. The seminar can help health care facilities comply with The Joint Commissions’ National Patient Safety Goal on alarm management.
After the seminar, it is expected that attendees will be able to:
- Understand challenges to tackling alarm management and factors that influence the number of alarms.
- Use data to drive decisions about alarms.
- Design workflow and processes to reduce the number of nuisance alarms.
- Use the information to prepare to meet the regulatory requirements for alarm management and patient safety.

The second seminar, set for 12 p.m.-1 p.m. ET on Aug. 10, is “Effects of Patient Load and Other Monitoring System Design Choices on Inpatient Monitoring Quality.” It will feature presentations on new research that quantifies the impact of patient load on mintor watchers’ response time to life-threatening cardiac rhythms.
At this seminar, participants are expected to learn:
- How increasing the number of patients monitored by cardiac telemetry affects the ability of monitor watchers to respond to critical arrhythmias.
- How increasing the number of patients monitored by cardiac telemetry affects the ability of monitor watchers to perform typical daily tasks.
- Which additional characteristics of monitoring system design are likely to influence prevention of and response time to critical events.
- Novel methods for evaluating the impact of system design on monitoring quality.
