The Freeze

I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada almost two years ago to get away from the cold and snow of the Cleveland, Ohio area. That worked well! You see, the temperature dropped to the 20s for a few days in a row and popped some pipes on the solar system on the roof of the house. I needed to file a claim with the insurance company along with the estimate from the solar people.

So why should you care? I’m getting to that, be patient. I’ll moan on patience later.

A solar fix-it guy informed me that he was going to provide me with an inflated estimate so that I would get my deductible back. I was taken aback. (That is a strange word, isn’t it?  I wonder what it means.) He was inviting me to enter into an insurance fraud commitment with him. Insurance Fraud Fred (not his real name) just assumed that I am as dishonest as he is.

I once was asked what to do in a case where the person was presented with an option to do something dishonest. My advice was that once you do it, the next time and all subsequent instances become easier and easier to do. I reminded myself of this and told Fred that I would be passing on his offer. It is interesting that I was the uncomfortable one in this case.

So, the final result is that I have my integrity intact. I stand confidently with principled virtue with the knowledge that I avoided temptation. And jail. And my wallet is not burdened with additional cash, and my solar is not yet fixed. Let me know what you think.
