Manny’s Moans – The Toast

I work from home. I sometimes work in the living room instead of the office set up in one of the bedrooms. This exposes me to daytime TV in the living room. Morning talk shows are amazingly uninteresting to me. They apparently are meant to not challenge the mind prior to the coffee kicking in.
The two hosts of one of these morning shows normally have glasses of wine on their table as they talk to each other and to their guests. As I worked, I sometimes glanced at the TV when distracted by all the yak-yak and blah-blah that goes on during the show.
When a guest showed up, they all hugged and one of the hosts handed him a glass of wine. They welcomed him and toasted his success at whatever show or movie he was marketing that day. After clinking glasses, the guest put his glass to his lips. Both hosts put their glasses back on the table without sipping the wine.
This scenario happens often in my experience. Someone makes a toast to which all raise their glasses. Often, one or more of the toasted places the glass back down without drinking. To me, not sipping from the glass after a toast indicates disagreement with whatever is being toasted. I see this behavior even when the toast is to health. How can anyone disagree with that?
When I see this non-toast happening, I immediately place myself in caution mode. I begin to distrust the individual and become very careful of his or her intentions. I’m even a little irritated that he did not drink to my eloquent and fitting toast. How can this individual be so rude and still be at my table?
Luckily for that person, after a few drinks, they become my best friends ever and I’m gushing with love for the rest of the evening.
