Imaging modalities today all connect to the network, whether through a hard wire connection or wirelessly. When I’m tasked to resolve a network-related issue, I always try to follow a simple process and start with easy fixes. In this article, I’ll discuss the most common reasons for network failure in ultrasounds and share my troubleshooting tips.

A percentage of probes, every month, are reported as experiencing noise artifact. With a high degree of confidence, we can say that less than 10% of those probes have failures affecting noise sensitivity.
As connected medical devices become more important to modern healthcare, biomedical engineers have a clear responsibility to keep cyber security in mind, from procurement and implementation to the regular monitoring and updating of the devices they use.
Sponsored by Avante Health Solutions By Jim Sharkey The purchase of larger refurbished systems for diagnostic imaging and oncology such as linear accelerators, CT, cath labs and MRI can cost between $200,000 and upwards of $1 million. While these costs are a sizeable capital expenditure, the purchase of quality refurbished systems can present a great cost savings when compared to cost of the same new equipment. Opting for refurbished equipment is particularly attractive if you match it with similar models that are already in use at your facility. This allows you to leverage the knowledge base and training of your treatment team…
Sponsored by Innovatus Imaging By Ted Lucidi, CBET Today, we’re surrounded by countless pieces of technology in our everyday lives. Almost every electronic device contains some type of oscillator circuit that has the potential to affect the electro-magnetic spectrum. Call it Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI), Radio-Frequency Interference (RFI) or environmental/atmospheric noise. I recently read an article that classified this concept as electro-magnetic pollution. Throughout my career in ultrasound, one of the most frequent and most challenging problems to solve has been related to noise artifacts. Typically, these present as axial bands of constant or flashing color in Color Doppler mode. Intense sources…
Sponsored by Nuvolo By Tony Bailey In some health care organizations, there are two departments who don’t always sit at the same table. The healthcare technology management (HTM) team who support the medical devices, and the IT security team who responds to security events. The technicians in the HTM team are responsible for device safety and the IT security analysts protect information. When there’s insufficient collaboration between these teams, device disruption due to security events can take too long to remediate. Adverse patient outcomes or data loss can then occur. It’s not that there’s no one monitoring for unusual device…
Sponsored by Innovatus Imaging By Matt Tomory In uncertain times, it’s easy to hunker down and hold tightly to what you have. After all, there is nothing we can do about current and future circumstances which are completely out of our control. Right? The above is a classic example of a fixed mindset, one that does not believe in a company’s ability to control their own future vs. take what comes. During past recessions, companies with this mentality are quite often those that actually didn’t survive. Harvard Business Review, March 2010, in an article called “Roaring Out of Recession,” analyzed…
Sponsored by TKA By Jeff Niederhausen In most cases, when organizations are challenged to find new opportunities, the rallying cry is generally to “think outside the box.” But what if you ask your HTM team to “think inside the box” instead? When organizations skip this step, they miss great insights and learnings that can be just as innovative and impactful. The goal is to take what you already have and improve, which is a critical tactic when managing the tightest budgets. Taking time for an internal brainstorming session can unlock untapped capabilities that can improve productivity and your bottom line.…
Sponsored by Avante Health Solutions By Drew Dennis and Dorian J. Davis The infusion pump is a ubiquitous device in the patient care process. They can be found in almost any care setting and deliver crucial medications when they’re needed most. Care facilities often maintain a large fleet of infusion pumps, a considerable undertaking for busy technicians and hospital staff. In order to maximize the efficiency of the infusion pumps at their facilities, clinicians can employ some key strategies when it comes to purchasing and maintenance. Get Cost Savings with Professionally Refurbished Infusion Pumps The most obvious advantage to choosing…
Sponsored by Medigate By Jonathan Langer The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is revolutionizing the process and practice of patient care. Also known as “connected medical devices,” they generate, collect, analyze and transmit patient data. Whether they’re stationary or mobile, internally or externally deployed, connecting to home, public WiFi or cellular networks, the problem for health systems is at some point they’re connecting to enterprise networks. Furthermore, as these devices frequently enter and exit the landscape at different intersections, each presents its own dynamic set of risks. Not only were traditional network security protocols not designed to address them, but…
